“To age gracefully, one needs to anticipate the changes that are inevitable,” Mark Frazier, PsyD, says. “People who think rigidly do not do that. As they encounter the natural changes and health status that are part of aging, these things are experienced as negative. This adds a lot of stress and strain to their life. Rigid thinkers tend to get overwhelmed. They can’t manage it, and they get depressed.”

Frazier has worked with many older people whose ages range from 65 – 105. Through his line of work, he believes that the key to psychological health is anticipating what will happen. He says, “[When]…you know that ahead of time, it’s much easier to manage it.”

Aging is something we’ve been doing ever since we are born, but it doesn’t get to be a problem until you reach some milestone that society has cast a negative shadow on. However, the key to growing older gracefully is by accepting that change. It is what gets you ready for the aging process, because aging is an inevitable part of the circle of life.

Activities That Give You Purpose

Finding meaningful activities that give you purpose, keep you moving, allow you to connect to others and engage in mental awareness. It’s crucial to find things that are important to you.  Think of any and all things you’ve been putting off for years because of work and children.

You can start traveling, engage in new (or old) hobbies, find new social groups, join a club – whatever sparks your curiosity and keeps you interested. Become more social as you age. Studies show that those who spend more time socializing are known to be more mentally alert. Socializing reduces your risk of memory problems.

Being comfortable in your skin as you age means it’s your chance to tackle something unfamiliar and new to you. Go out of your comfort zone and build new experiences. Besides creating excitement and happiness in your life, these experiences enhance your mental health. This is because they build new pathways in your brain, which keeps your focus, concentration, and memory in great shape.

Taking care of yourself physically and mentally early on is what paves the way for a smooth transition from youth to old age. One of the most important things you should do is put sunscreen on your face, neck, and hands.

Retinoids are also often gone overlooked, even though it plumps up skin cells them and rejuvenates them. It’s the vitamin A within them that re-teaches your skin how to be young again by stimulating the collagen in your skin.

Another key tip to having younger looking skin is keeping it hydrated all year long with a moisturizer. Make sure you switch types to meet each season’s demands.

Even if you weren’t at your healthiest in your 20s, 30s, or 40s, you can still make a big difference later on as you age. There are many ways to age gracefully. Making a few lifestyle changes like moisturizing regularly, eating right, and exercising a bit more. This will reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, depression, diabetes, and even losing your balance and falling down.

Obsession With Negative Aspects Of Aging

“For some reason, our society is very obsessed with pointing out negative aspects of aging,” says Susan Whitbourne, PhD, professor of psychology at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She is also the past president of the American Psychological Association’s Division on Aging.

When you grow gracefully, you glow with confidence and health. You no longer allow people to control your thoughts or emotions. You are more secure in yourself and your abilities. Not going out of your way to remain youthful is the best way you can age gracefully.

Knowing How To Accept Aging Gracefully

Sure, there will be hardships. Things will slow down. There will be more aches and pains. However, those who know how to accept aging gracefully know the importance of building their muscles by doing strength training on a regular basis.

So older adults who know how to use their age to their advantage are the ones who don’t let things get in the way of their health. They are wiser, more resilient, enjoy a more mature perspective and do age gracefully.
